Virtual Clinical Psychologist — VA Disability Evaluation Exams (DBQ)

Pay: $120,000.00 - $360,000.00 per year

Remote - U.S.A. / Contract

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

HealthTap Practice Group is seeking licensed, doctorate-level clinical psychologists (PhD/PsyD) to conduct VA Medical Disability Evaluation (MDE) telehealth examinations for U.S. military Veterans. Practitioners must have completed VBA TRAIN or be willing to complete it as part of the interview process (training compensation provided). This is a high-volume, mission-driven 1099 independent contractor opportunity with the potential to earn $240,000 to $300,000+ per year (full-time+ equivalent) while working entirely from home.

You will perform focused, forensic-style psychological evaluations via video and complete the associated Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) that the VA uses to adjudicate Veterans' service-connected disability claims. These are evaluation-only encounters — no ongoing treatment, prescriptions, or therapeutic care is involved.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Conduct structured telehealth psychological evaluations of Veterans who have filed service-connected disability claims with the VA. Each visit involves a focused video interview with the Veteran, followed by completion of the corresponding DBQ form on an electronic platform. Typical exam types include:

  • Mental Disorders DBQ (other than PTSD and Eating Disorders) — approx. 30 minutes

  • Eating Disorders DBQ — approx. 30 minutes

  • PTSD DBQ — Initial — approx. 45 minutes

  • PTSD DBQ — Review — approx. 30 minutes

For each evaluation, you will:

  • Review the Veteran's available medical records and claim file prior to or during the exam.

  • Conduct a focused clinical interview via live video to assess the Veteran's current symptomatology, history, and level of occupational and social impairment.

  • Apply DSM-5 diagnostic criteria to render or confirm diagnoses.

  • Complete the electronic DBQ form on the platform, documenting clinical findings, symptoms, behavioral observations, competency determinations, and your examiner certification.

  • Where applicable, provide a Medical Opinion (MO) addressing whether a condition is service-related, based on your review of the Veteran's records.

You will not provide treatment, prescribe medications, or establish an ongoing patient-provider relationship. These are forensic evaluations conducted at the request of the VA.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

This role is designed to let you focus entirely on clinical work. The operational and administrative infrastructure is handled for you:

  • Scheduling — a scheduling team coordinates all Veteran appointments based on the availability windows you provide each month. Higher-availability providers are prioritized for scheduling volume.

  • Credentialing — A dedicated Credentialing Specialist manages your VA credentialing, background screening, and education verification.

  • Training — Practitioners will be compensated for the time needed to complete all required VA training (VBA TRAIN).  Training is self-paced, online, and takes approximately 10 to 15 hours. CME/CEU credits will be provided.. If VBA TRAIN has already been completed; that existing certification will transfer.

  • Technology — All visits are conducted via video conferencing and an EMR platform. DBQ forms are completed electronically within the platform.

  • Quality Assurance — A Q&A Team reviews every submission for completeness before it is sent to the VA, helping ensure your work meets acceptance criteria.

  • Provider Liaison — You will be assigned a dedicated Provider Liaison who manages your schedule, provides platform support, and assists with any pending DBQs.

  • Malpractice Coverage — Professional liability insurance for all evaluations completed through HealthTap Practice Group is maintained and paid for by HealthTap.

QUALIFICATIONS

We are looking for experienced, detail-oriented clinical psychologists who meet the following criteria:

  • Licensed doctorate-level clinical psychologist (PhD or PsyD) from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), with an active, unrestricted license in at least one U.S. state.

  • Board-certified or board-eligible preferred.

  • Be willing to commit to 20 or more hours per week.

  • A minimum of two years of post-doctoral clinical experience conducting psychological assessments or diagnostic evaluations.

  • Proficiency with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for mental health disorders.

  • Experience with or willingness to learn VA Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) completion and forensic-style evaluation methodology.

  • Prior experience with VA disability evaluations (C&P exams) is a strong plus but not required.

  • Comfortable conducting clinical interviews and assessments via live video telehealth.

  • Strong documentation skills — ability to produce clear, thorough, and defensible clinical narratives.

  • Reliable high-speed internet connection and a private, professional workspace suitable for telehealth.

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident (required for VA credentialing).

  • Willing to complete VBA TRAIN certification (approximately 10–15 hours, self-paced, online) if not already certified.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

COMPENSATION

$100 per successfully completed DBQ visit, paid on a per-visit basis. A "successfully completed" visit means the evaluation is conducted, the DBQ is submitted, passes quality review, and the VA remits payment.

  • Per-visit rate: $100 per completed DBQ visit.

  • Expected visit duration: ~50 minutes of video interaction + documentation/form submission.

  • Payment terms: typically within net 45 days of DBQ submission to the VA.

  • Malpractice insurance: Provided and paid for by HealthTap Practice Group.

  • Schedule: Flexible — you set your own availability windows monthly (see Availability Commitment below)

Availability Commitment.

Due to the high volume of Veterans awaiting evaluations, candidates who can commit to greater weekly availability will be given strong preference in the selection process. We are prioritizing candidates as follows:

  • Highest priority — 40 to 60 hours per week → estimated $240,000 – $360,000+ per year

  • Strong consideration — 20 to 40 hours per week → estimated $120,000 – $240,000 per year

Candidates committing to 40 to 60 hours per week will receive first priority for onboarding and scheduling. Candidates in the 20 to 40 hour range are also welcome and will be considered on a competitive basis.

CONTRACTING STRUCTURE

You will contract directly with HealthTap Medical FL, P.A. as a 1099 independent contractor. HealthTap Practice Group is the professional corporation responsible for clinical oversight, performance standards, and provider compensation. Our VA partner will serve as the operational partner managing scheduling, credentialing, VA training, quality review, and the technology platform. This is not an employment relationship with either entity.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

WHY THIS OPPORTUNITY

Serve those who served. Every evaluation you complete directly supports a Veteran's disability claim and their access to the benefits they have earned through military service.

Earn competitively from home.

Work on your terms. Set your own monthly availability. While higher-commitment candidates are prioritized, you retain flexibility in how you structure your hours week to week.

Zero administrative burden. No billing, no insurance credentialing, no patient acquisition, no EHR costs. Scheduling, technology, training, and quality assurance are all handled for you.

Streamlined, focused clinical work. These are structured forensic evaluations — not open-ended therapy. Each visit follows a defined protocol with clear documentation requirements, making the work efficient and predictable.
